Why the High Priority of Abortion?

Even in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, some of those in power who adamantly demand the shut down of almost everything and that people stay-at-home are as equally adamant that abortion clinics remain open and active. These same leaders make abortion availability and funding a, if not the, priority of their political agendas. Why is it that so many commit themselves to protecting, promoting and funding abortion?

The truth of our reality is that there is good and evil. Scripture emphasizes this dichotomy rather than allowing for middle ground or ambiguity. Moses sums it up when he exhorts Israel, “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life.” (Deut 30:19) Life or death, blessing or curse.

Jesus makes two things clear for people. We can follow God as children of the Father, or we follow Satan as his children. He rebukes his opponents and declares this truth to them,

“If God were your Father, you would love me…You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning and has nothing to do with truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:42, 44)

We serve and follow God or the devil, according to Jesus. When Peter rebuked Jesus for saying he was going to die and rise again, Jesus didn’t just correct him by saying he was a little off in his thinking. Jesus rebuked him and the source of his argument, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” (Mark 8:33) There are the things of God, and there are the things of Satan and sinful man. And people will all one day be identified as the sheep of God or the goats of Satan on their way to heaven or hell. (Matt 25:31-46)

C.S. Lewis in his usual brilliance pegged the constant conflict between God’s kingdom and the kingdom of Satan, “There is no neutral ground in the universe. Every square inch, every split second is claimed by God, and counterclaimed by Satan.” No neutral ground. No neutral side. No in between life or death.

Jesus tells us that there is a destructive thief in the world. He comes “ONLY to steal, kill and destroy.” (John 10:10) Peter describes him as being like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. (1 Pet 5:8) The Apostle Paul warns us of the schemes of Satan and also that his agents masquerade as servants of righteousness. (2 Cor 11:15) Jesus on the other hand has come to give abundant life. (John 10:10) He is the author of life. (Acts 3:15)

There are many people that are victims of evil, Satan and cruel people or situations. Pregnancy Resource Centers serve many of them. They need rescuing from Satan’s grip, the oppression of people and even their own self-destructiveness. Mary Magdalene was such a person whom Jesus healed and delivered and transformed into a most faithful follower of his. This is a miracle we pray to see over and over at PRC’s.

There are also many people who have aligned themselves with Satan, whether consciously or not. They advocate for destructiveness. They work to facilitate death and evil. There is no greater manifestation of this than abortion that kills the most innocent and fragile among us.

When we consider that sinful people are captive to sin, enemies of God, deceived by Satan, often harassed or possessed by Satan’s minions and vulnerable to the powers of evil that come to steal, kill and destroy, we should not be surprised that people of the world follow Satan in making the destruction of life a priority. There has never been a greater affront to God than killing children before or after birth. In the Old Testament history, sacrificing children to demons was the height of evil and rebellion against God, life and goodness.

One among several examples: “They built the high places of Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to offer up their sons and daughters to Molech, though I did not command them, nor did it enter into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.” (Jeremiah 32:19)

There is no neutral ground: life and death, darkness and life, blessings and curses, the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan, pro-life and pro-abortion. Satan entered Judas to betray Jesus to death. Afterwards, he was remorseful and killed himself – another victimizer and victim of Satan. There are so many following a path that leads to destruction.

The Apostle Paul encourages us that our battle is not against people no matter how cruel and dangerous they are, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:12-13)

Our battle is with the spiritual forces of evil that are advocating abortion by deceiving and using people to call evil good and carry out their wicked plans. Therefore, we are not surprised at the affection for abortion that unbelievers and less-than-earnest believers have and promote. It is from Satan, the hater of life.

The good news for us in all of these circumstances is that Jesus has overcome Satan and given us power to trample on him, bind him and cast him off through our prayers, the word of God and our good fight of faith. Don’t be discouraged. Put on the armor of God and pray earnestly for God to move. “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet!” (Rom 16:20)
